Lineage

This chart is necessarily incomplete due to the many masters who contributed to Ryukyu kobudo, but it shows the major teachers in our system's lineage. There is also disagreement between some historians as to dates. Okinawans often have three names - the Okinawan name, a Japanese version, and a Chinese version. If a teacher is known by more than one name, it is under the most commonly used name in parentheses. It is interesting to note that Akamine Eisuke, our organization's second president, first studied Yamane-ryu bojutsu (staff fighting) under four of Chinen Sanda's students before he began training with Taira Shinken. Higa Yuchoku, while not a kobudo teacher per se, is extremely important, as we derive our gamanku (hip power) from his Chibana-ha Shorin-ryu karate.
